Well, now that you have your Sony Reader, you are probably, like me, addicted to it.  Since I purchased my reader, my reading has gone from 2 hours a week, to 2 hours a day.  I can’t get enough!  So, I started my quest on where I could find free Sony Reader ebooks to increase my ebook library.

free sony reader ebooksI have made several purchases on the Sony Store, but I am reading several books a week, and I found that that would be a bit expensive to continue like that.  I do not believe in illegal downloading, I believe the authors should be compensated for their works so that was not an option for me.

When I was searching online I stumbled upon something quite exciting, Google Books.  Google has placed a collection of books in the Public Domain online that are free to download.  The Public Domain collection has grown to nearly 1,000,000 books.  What books in the Public Domain means, is the books are out of copy write and can be freely distributed.

Below is an excerpt from Wikipedia that talks about the Google Books project and the number of books available:

“By March 2007, Google had digitized one million books, according to the The New York Times at an estimated cost of US$5 million.[10] On October 28, 2008, Google stated that they had seven million books searchable through Google Books, including those scanned by their 20,000 publisher partners.[11] Of the 7 million books, 1 million are “full preview” based on agreements with publishers. One million are in the public domain. Most scanned works are no longer in print or commercially available.[12] On October 9, 2009, Google announced that the number of scanned books is over ten million”

At first I was leery, but then I found great books that I have really enjoyed reading from authors like Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Jane Austen, Oscar Wilde and hundreds more.  To search for free Sony Reader ebooks, go to Google Books Advanced Search, enter your search criteria, check off the Public Domain button, and click on search. Once you find your book, you will see a download link, when you can download the books in Sony Reader EPUB format.

Well, I found myself spending way too much time on Google Books site, so I then discovered there were some great ebook packages for Sony Reader available online.  Some people have taken the time to collect 1000’s of great ebooks, categorize them by author and title, provide searchable indexes, and for a small shipping fee, mail you a DVD collection of classic ebooks for Sony Reader.  Click here to see one that I recently acquired; now I do not have to spend all my time online downloading books as I have this great collection on my hard drive.

Well, I am done writing for the day, and am going back to reading some more Sony Reader ebooks.  I hope you find this post informative and find some great classics also.

If you have been searching for eBooks for Sony Reader here is some information you need to know. After a certain period of time books lose their copyright and become part of what’s called the “Public Domain.” When a book reaches this status it is no longer considered illegal to distribute the title without giving compensation to the author, who is typically long dead at that point anyway. Until recently this meant very little to anyone but book publishers, but in today’s world anyone can download and share public domain works online. Because of a deal between Sony and Google, owners of Sony eBook Readers can access over a million free, public domain eBooks in the Sony Reader compatible file format EPUB, and LRF–and easily transfer them to their readers.

Ebooks in EPUB format offer a selection of top quality books for all to read and, although the collection is growing every day, I know everyone wants more!

sony_readerEPUB is now a standard e-book file format that is compatible with almost all devices in e-book reading include Sony Reader, Bbebook, IREX Reader, iPhone, and the corner next to Barnes & Noble .

The Sony Reader also uses the format LRF.

Apart from hardware devices, you can also read EPUB books on your desktop or mobile phone for free using software like Stanza e-Reader, Mobipocket, FBReader (for Linux), Aldiko (for Android) or Adobe Digital Editions.

Firefox users can download EPUBReader, a free add-on that allows you to read the contents of any right EPUB book in your favorite web browser without special software.

EPUB format may a zip file containing a set of text files and images. This add-on simply unzip the zip file and view the contents of your browser.

In the normal course, if you click on a link that points to an EPUB file, Firefox asks if you want to save the file on your hard drive, but with this extension installed, an electronic book opens directly into the Firefox tab and everything website.

In addition, you can open any file EPUB at your desktop using the File -> Open from the File menu in Firefox. All eBook is automatically saved in your Firefox profile in a separate subdirectory.

There are many sources for ebooks in EPUB format your desktop, Sony Reader or another device, but the best collection I have found for the Sony Reader, uses the LRF format, also supported by Sony Reader can be found HERE.
